The War on Te Pāti Māori
How Fear and Racism Shape Right-Wing Narratives

When truth is buried beneath fear, history becomes a weapon, not a teacher. - Dr Harpreet Singh
Te Pāti Māori is under sustained attack from right-wing parties and lobby groups determined to brand it as divisive, separatist, and extremist. This is not neutral disagreement. It is racialised politics that erases Te Tiriti’s history and frequently relies on disinformation.
Framing Māori Rights as “Race-Based Privilege”
Te Pāti Māori’s advocacy for co-governance and Māori health initiatives is frequently portrayed by groups such as Hobson’s Pledge and parties including ACT, NZ First and National as “race-based” or “special privileges”. This framing erases the Treaty’s constitutional role and the historic injustices Te Pāti Māori seeks to address. It recasts restorative measures championed by Te Pāti Māori as unfair advantage rather than legal obligation.
Cultural Expression Portrayed as Disorder
When Te Pāti Māori MPs performed a haka in Parliament during the Treaty Principles Bill debate, ACT leaders David Seymour and Nicole McKee and NZ First leader Winston Peters condemned the act as “arrogance”, “anarchy” and “extremism”. These attacks target Te Pāti Māori’s use of tikanga as a legitimate form of political expression, racialising Māori identity by equating cultural practices with chaos and reinforcing stereotypes that Māori customs are incompatible with democratic norms.
Erasing Treaty and Colonial History
Te Pāti Māori’s calls for tino rangatiratanga and recognition of Te Tiriti o Waitangi are reframed by opponents as separatism. Hobson’s Pledge and its allies promote the slogan “one law for all”, assuming a level playing field that never existed. This narrative ignores systemic land confiscations, suppression of te reo Māori and repeated breaches of Te Tiriti, issues Te Pāti Māori consistently highlights in its platform.
Disinformation and Selective Narratives
Te Pāti Māori has repeatedly criticised the selective reporting of investigations that cleared wrongdoing, noting how right-wing rhetoric amplifies allegations while omitting exonerations. Hobson’s Pledge has also run billboard campaigns against Māori wards using misleading claims, later ruled socially irresponsible by the Advertising Standards Authority. These tactics create distrust and perpetuate stigma, undermining Te Pāti Māori’s efforts to advance equity and justice.
Negative Perceptions Among Māori Voters
While many Māori rally behind Te Pāti Māori in response to these attacks, some feel negatively. Narratives portraying Te Pāti Māori as aggressive or extremist can make voters worry about backlash or question its effectiveness. Disinformation about “special rights” can confuse less politically engaged Māori, leading to hesitation or disengagement from Te Pāti Māori’s kaupapa.
Why It Matters
These attacks do more than target Te Pāti Māori. They shape public opinion, fuel racial stereotypes, and undermine informed debate about Treaty obligations. By framing Māori rights as divisive and erasing historical context, these narratives weaken democratic discourse and risk reversing decades of progress toward equity and justice, goals central to Te Pāti Māori’s mission.
Attacks on Te Pāti Māori by Hobson’s Pledge and politicians from ACT, NZ First, and National are often racialised, historically blind, and misleading. They frame indigenous rights as “division”, minimise colonisation, and cherry-pick stories to weaken Māori self-determination, leaving public debate distorted by stereotype and bad faith.

Irrespective of the issues they’re working through within the party (not too different from other political parties at different times and on different issues) it’s so important to keep our eyes on this toxic malinformation from the likes of right wing groups like Hobson’s Pledge and the parties that make up this destructive government. Thanks for this clear and succinct summary.
